TAKEN FROM A CONVERSATION BETWEEN NEIL YOUNG AND BRY CARTER
AT THE MEADOWLANDS SHOW, SEPTEMBER 4th, 1983.

NYAS : I think your new album is tremendous, many members of the society also think so. Robert Plant has tried it Bruce Springsteen tried it with "Detroit Melody". You seem to have the perfect 50's voice. Why is the album so short ? NEIL : Songs were a lot shorter then, only 2 minutes or so. I had 5 or 6 songs a side, that's nly 10-12 minutes. Actuallyt I only did 5 songs on each side, I left "It's allright" off the album. NYAS : You played it during the earlier shows. NEIL : Yeah. NYAS : I think it's a tremendous song. Nice to hear "Love is a Rose" and " Field of Opportunity ". The only dissappointment I had was that you didn't play " Pocahontas" NEIL : Well "Pocahontas" and "Powderfinger are interchangable. NYAS : Your looking in good shape. NEIL : Thank you. NYAS : I was talking to Dan and Joel - Your going to make the whole tour this time. NEIL ; That's right. NYAS : You appear more relaxed during your concerts in the United States. NEIL : Relating to the European tour - I hadn't been on the road for four years. The band was good, working with Nils was great. I had a lot of trouble getting the band to gel together. It took a lot of time, I was not relaxed. I would like the opportunity to play England again. As a matter of fact, we tried to book Hammersmith during this break. We could not get a hall. We even tried Scotland. NYAS : Every night in London - you did not seem to be enjoying it. NEIL : I just wasn't very loose. This show is a lot easier - I'm by myself on acoustic guitar. Thats why I wanted to come over and do it. Maybe in the near future though I've got to draw the line somewhere. I've been touring for over a year, I have my family life. I would dearly love to go back and play some of those dates again. |
NYAS : You seemed to enjot yourself in Berlin NEIL The last night was the best night of the tour. I compare the tour to the " Time Fades Away" tour in 1973. I've had two rough tours - it just happens. I tried to put together a band to make it work. It was too much work and not enough fun. NYAS : The first time I saw you was back in 1973 at the Glasgow Apollo. NEIL : The " Tonights the Night" tour. The best show was at Bristol - a great show there. "Tonights the Night " was pretty radical - I was abusive to the crowd. NYAS : People were expecting "Harvest" and "After the Goldrush" NEIL : Yeah ( laughs) NYAS : There were Scotsman shouting "After the Goldrush" and you were saying " Pardon - I don't understand you". They were shouting in Jock accents. NEIL : I couldn't understand them. NYAS : A few well known tracks pulled you through. I left the theatre confused and exhilerated. By the way " Tonights the Night" is my favourite album. NEIL : Great NYAS : Dan Clear seems to enjoy is role. He's very good NEIL : Yes, he is. I think you would enjoy this show over in England. NYAS : Definately. If you played some of those tunes that you played tonight in England .......... NEIL : I wanted to do it .............. it's not that easy. Everybody I spoke to said it's impossible. I wanted to go over there - we had six weeks notice but it didn'i work out. NYAS : Thank you very much for your time Neil, it's been a pleasure meeting you ..... and Pegi .... or should I say Honey ? NEIL & PEGI : Thank you.

I would like to stress that the reason for the short answers from Neil was the over-enthusiasm of Bry trying to ask as much as he possibly could in the time available. Also would like to congratulate Bry for doing a fine job with no preperation ....... Andy |
